Heavy Drinkers Live Longer - Say Study Results

Alcoholism Clinical and Experimental’ studies point out the fact that heavy drinkers do live longer than the ones who drink moderately or even abstain from alcohol totally. The stunning results were backed by statistics which were taken after studying 2,000 people over a period of 20 years. A team from the University of Texas, Austin were actively involved in the study.

A glass of milk takes garlic breath away!

London: Scientists say the best way to combat garlic`s lingering odour is to have a glass of milk.

Drinking milk was found to reduce garlic breath when even brushing your teeth doesn``t work.

In tests with raw and cooked cloves, milk was shown to `significantly reduce` concentrations of the chemicals that give garlic its long-lasting smell.

One of the compounds – allyl methyl sulphide (AMS) – cannot be broken down during digestion, causing it to be released from the body in the breath and sweat.

Eight cancer signs identified

London: Researchers have highlighted the eight unexplained symptoms that are most closely linked to cancer. The Keele University team also points to the age at which patients should be most concerned by the symptoms, which include blood in urine and anaemia. The other symptoms are: rectal blood, coughing up blood, breast lump or mass, difficulty swallowing, post-menopausal bleeding and abnormal prostate tests, reports the BBC.

Grapefruit Shows Promise in Treating Diabetes

London: Grapefruit has shown promise in the treatment of diabetes, thanks to the presence of an antioxidant in it.

Naringenin, which gives grapefruit its bitter taste, can do the same job as two separate drugs used in managing Type 2 diabetes, scientists said.

Diabetes occurs when the body is unable to produce enough insulin to properly regulate blood-sugar levels.

Naringenin helps to increase the body's sensitivity to insulin. It also helps sufferers maintain a healthy weight, which is a vital part of diabetes

Marriage is bad for your sex life

London: Marriage seems to be bad for your sex life. Couples who have sex over four times a week before their wedding, barely have it once a week three years after tying the knot, a survey in Britain has found. Researchers found that before marriage, couples can hope to have sex more than four times a week.

But after three years of married life, there is a dramatic drop in their sex life and most couples have sex just once every seven days.
The survey was conducted among 3,000 married couple.

Six out of ten couples think that marriage has completely ruined the

Alcohol doubles breast cancer risk

London:  A glass of wine a day doubles a woman’s risk of developing a common type of breast cancer, say scientists.
Women drinking just seven units of alcohol a week - half the recommended safe level - have a much increased chance of developing lobular cancer, compared to those who don’t drink at all, reports express.co.uk. Lobular cancer is the second most common form of breast cancer and is the most common in women between 45 and 55 years.

Lose weight by drinking two cups of water!

Washington: There's an elixir that needs no prescription, has no side-effects and almost comes for free. Just two cups of water taken before meals can help you win the battle of the bulge, a new clinical trial has confirmed.

Researchers at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) presented these results.

"We are presenting results of the first randomised controlled intervention trial demonstrating that increased water consumption is an effective weight loss strategy," said Brenda Davy, senior study author, Virginia Tech Institute, US.

Brothers ‘delay’ puberty in kid sisters

Having older brothers delays the age at which girls get their periods, Australian researchers have found.

"What we found was that there was an older age at menarche (when a girl first gets her period) for girls who had older brothers," ABC Science quoted human behavioural ecologist Dr Debra Judge, of the University of Western Australia in Perth, as saying.

Judge and PhD student Fritha Milne investigated the effect of siblings among 273 Australian men and women between the ages of 18 and 75.

Early maturity linked to pesticides, say experts

Beijing: Chinese experts have claimed that early maturity in children is linked to pesticides even as parents across the country are concerned over milk powder produced by a Chinese company that is alleged to have caused three girls to grow breasts.

Three female infants Aug 9 in Wuhan of central China’s Hubei province were reported suffering abnormal sexual development. Doctors and parents suspected the milk powder they had been using contained sex hormones, China Daily reported Wednesday.

Though the health ministry said Sunday that its investigation found no evidence that the formula made by NASDAQ-listed Synutra caused the babies to develop breasts, concerns over children’s health came to the forefront in some Chinese cities.

Vivid dreams improve our memories

London: Vivid dreams have a way of boosting our memories, making us better problem solvers. People who go through a dream-filled sleep can recall information more easily and link facts upon awakening. The results add to the growing body of evidence that Rapid Eye Movement (REM) sleep (when our most intensely remembered dreams occur) is vital to the brain’s ability to lay down and consolidate memories, reports the Telegraph.
