A brain region, called the medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), is responsible for sex 'addiction' in a person, according to a study.
People with addictive or compulsive disorders frequently display an inability to inhibit behaviours once they become maladaptive, despite adverse consequences of their behaviour.
The mPFC is a brain region involved in decision-making and behavioural flexibility, and it has been identified as a potential mediator of behavioural inhibition.
In a new study, Dr. Lique Coolen and colleagues tested whether the mPFC is involved in inhibition of sexual behaviour when associated with aversive outcomes.
Using a carefully designed experimental paradigm in rats, the researchers found that lesions of the mPFC result in compulsive sexual behaviour.

Sex for 10 minutes is ‘ideal’
It may come as a surprise to many people, but the most desirable length for sex is just 10 minutes, a survey of has revealed. A survey of 50 members of the Society for Sex Threapy and Research, who counsel and treat couples with sexual problems, said that between one and two minutes was too short, three to seven minutes was acceptable, and anything over 13 minutes was too long.
The added that sex lasting between seven and 13 minutes was "desirable".
Contrary to popular fantasy about the need for hours of passionate activity, sex therapists say around ten minutes is perfectly satisfactory.
Sex in romantic relationships is harmless
Adolescents who have sex with their romantic partners do not perform poorly in academics, found a new study. However, the same doesn’t hold true for sexual intercourse outside of romantic relationships.
Titled, ‘Sex and School: Adolescent Sexual Intercourse and Education’, the study found that the context in which adolescent sexual activity occurs can substantially moderate the negative relationship between sexual intercourse and education.
"Compared to abstinence, sexual intercourse in committed romantic relationships is often academically harmless, whereas in other types of relationships it is more detrimental," said Bill McCarthy and Eric Grodsky, sociologists at the University of California-Davis and the University of Minnesota, respectively.
Female condom project in 17 states
New Delhi: India has decided to step up its female condom (FC) programme in a big way in a bid to control the spread of HIV among women. With nearly 50% of the 1.7 lakh fresh cases of HIV reported annually being women, the drive will be expanded from eight states to 17 in the next few months. Though NACO buys FC at over Rs 20 a piece from Hindustan Latex Limited (HLL), it provides them to female sex workers (FSW) for only Rs 3.50 each.
As of now, FC is being made available to FSWs in Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, West Bengal, Maharashtra, Bihar, Jharkhand, Orissa and Rajasthan.
