San Francisco: Google Inc can sift through more than a trillion Web links in a matter of seconds, but can the Internet search leader help people wade through their overflowing e-mailboxes?
That's the challenge Google will try to tackle with the introduction of a tool called "Priority Inbox" in its Gmail service. The feature relies on formulas devised by Google engineers to automatically figure out and highlight which incoming messages are likely to be the most important to each Gmail user.

Google, AP reach deal on online news
San Francisco: Google and the Associated Press have reached a new deal that will allow the web-search giant to continue running stories from the AP on its Google News site, the internet company said Monday.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed in the announcement, which was posted on Google's official blog.
Google has not been linking directly to breaking AP stories since January when a previous agreement between the two sides expired. However Google still referred readers to older AP stories, and to AP stories at AP clients websites under a temporary licensing agreement.
Indian companies eye switch to rivals as BlackBerry ban looms
New Delhi/Mumbai: Indian companies are mulling options that include leaving Research in Motion (RIM) for other smartphone makers as they face a threatened ban on BlackBerry services that could disrupt business.
RIM's rivals Apple Inc and Nokia would be among the biggest gainers if India blocks BlackBerry services. Both firms are waiting to gain share in a market that has been mostly dependent on BlackBerry. BlackBerry, once a synonym for safe corporate communication, faces an Aug 31 deadline for giving Indian security agencies access to its corporate email and messenger services, failing which the services would be blocked, the government has said.
Internet wiping out printed Oxford Dictionary
London: The publisher of the Oxford English Dictionary says waning demand for printed versions means that the authoritative guide to the English language may only live online in the future.
The Oxford University Press says Sunday because of the increasing market for the dictionary's online version, the latest edition of the dictionary will only go to print if there is enough demand for the printed volume when it becomes ready.
A team of 80 lexicographers are preparing the third edition of the dictionary.

Hubli man chats with doctor during brain operation
Hubli: A doctor here recently conducted brain surgery on a patient who was awake throughout the operation.
Dr Mithun G Sattur, consultant neurosurgeon, Sushruta Multispeciality Hospital, explained the process and said it was the first time such a surgery had been conducted outside Bangalore and the metros.
"On August 13, we conducted an awake craniotomy at our hospital and saved the life of 40-year-old Shanmukh Kalburgi who had a tumour, very close to the area of the brain, which controls speech. The surgery lasted three hours and 20 minutes and the patient kept talking to the doctors all the time," the doctor said.
